Consolidating Lives: Integration in Shenandoah County
In September 1959 Shenandoah County opened three new consolidated high schools. Few people at the time reflected on the fact that not all county residents were welcome there.
As it always had been, African Americans were forced to attend separate schools. Local parks, pools, restrooms, and theatres were also segregated.
Today the story of segregation and integration is almost forgotten. Join us at this special African American History month program where Zach Hottel, Shenandoah County Library’s archivist, will discuss this important part of our history.
