Celebrate by helping us go digital!

After several months of planning, we are prepared to launch our updated digital archives. However we need content to fill this new space. To meet this need we will be hosting a series of digitization events including:

Public Digitization Day October 3:

The first of these is a public digitization day on Saturday October 3 from 10:00AM-4:00PM. During that time we invite you to bring in documents and objects relating to this area's history to be digitized. These items can then be utilized by researchers around the world to help tell our stories.

How it works:

-Bring your historic object or document by the library and complete a digitization form giving the archives permission to photograph/scan your items.

-Staff will photograph or scan your items and return them to you. (Books and large collections may have to be; loaned to the library for several weeks to complete digitization)<

-We will then ask you to share any information you have about the objects with us.

-The photographs, scans, and history we collected will be processed made available to researchers via the library'€™s website after a few weeks.

What we are looking for:

-Historic newspapers

-Family bibles






-Civil War Objects

-Items from World War II

Note: The Truban Archives focuses on Shenandoah County'€™s past. Items should have a local connection.

Digitization Marathon Week of October 19-23

Within the Truban Archives is an extensive collection of over 200;19th and 20th century tax books. These provide detailed information on demographics, business activities, financial transactions, slave ownership, and property transfers. Many of these books are only available at the archives. However they are difficult to utilize and many are extremely fragile. To protect these records, and to provide for better access, these have been given a priority place in our digitization schedule.

On October 19th will we begin the digitization of these books with a marathon event. Volunteers will be on hand each day from 10:00AM-4:00PM to scan these books. Different community organizations will serve as sponsors and provide volunteers to serve in a series of three hour shifts.
